Antiques by the Bay, Not Cancelled says Allen Michaan

Antiques By the Bay President Allen Michaan said that's not true. He said the show will be held as scheduled Sunday, writes Michele Ellson, Correspondent of the Oakland Tribune.
Malfeasance charged
Michaan accused the show's producers and company co-owners Betsy and Jerry Goldman of trying to scuttle Antiques By the Bay. And he said a lawsuit is coming.
The Goldmans, contacted at their Antiques By the Bay phone numbers, did not return a call seeking comment. Their answering machine message said the Nov. 1 show was canceled.

"They've gotten themselves into a lot of trouble," Michaan said.

message appeared later in the day. Company leaders also canceled their
advertisement in this newspaper.
Michaan said he had been calling dealers who
sell at the fair all day Wednesday to let them know that, contrary to what they
may have heard, the show is continuing.

"It's deplorable that the Goldmans think so little of the hundreds of dealers that depend on this show that they would try to destroy it," he said.
The fair has become an institution at Alameda Point, where it has been held

the first Sunday of every month since 1998. It draws about 800 vendors and 10,000 visitors a month, and show organizers claim it is the largest antique and collectibles show in Northern California.
Michaan said he created the concept for the fair, wrote its business plan, obtained the permits to set it up and paid all its bills in its early years, when it wasn't making any money. He said he brought the Goldmans in to manage and operate the show and offered them a partnership position. They own half of Antiques By the Bay, he said, and he and his ex-wife own the other half.
A quick check of online state records Wednesday afternoon showed the corporation is still active. And whatever happens, Michaan said the show will go on.
"We will not let the show die," he said.

Frank Berry clings to life

Just spoke with a friend at 24 HR. Fitness, who had called Frank Berry last week. I found out the reason Frank has not been at the Long Beach Swap Meet (working right across the aisle from me) is because he has been in the hospital for 15 days....with a blockage & almost died. He seems to be recovering well...but we don't know when he will be returning to work at the Swap Meet. He is very well liked & respected as a prominent dealer & friend. We wish him a speedy recovery & really hope that he will return to work with us.....as he is truly missed by everyone. (click on photo to see several shots of Berry and the things he sold.)

Temecula Resident Publishes Book on RumRill Pottery

Temecula, CA - - In addition to running a successful fitness company called Geri-Fit, Temecula resident Francesca Fisher is now a published author. Her new book entitled,“RumRill Pottery – the Ohio Years 1938-1942” has just been released by Collector Books.

Fisher’s passion for collecting RumRill pottery began when she was just 16-years-old. She frequently attended garage sales with her mother who was an avid glass collector. However, Fisher chose the soft earthen feel that the clay gave and purchased her first piece of RumRill pottery. That vase was marked “RumRill H-10 USA” on the bottom.

Fisher returned home and scoured every antique book guide and periodical her mother had, but she could not find any information about the pottery. Very little was written about it, so she continued to endeavor finding out as much as she could about this short-lived pottery.

Several years later, Fisher’s collection had grown to 100 pieces but there was still no information about it. “RumRill has never been a very easy pottery to find,” she says. “I’d go to shows and flea markets and ask the dealers if they had any RumRill, and they’d reply Rum Wheel???… never heard of it.”

Unlike McCoy, Shawnee, Roseville and Weller pottery, which were also manufactured in clay-rich southern Ohio, RumRill pottery was manufactured in Mt. Gilead, Ohio during the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. Although it did not have the quality of its rivals Roseville and Weller, its pleasing shapes and designs were unique and quite colorful.

In 1995, Fisher attended an antique show in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and found a dealer from Michigan that had 20 pieces of the pottery for sale. “I was like a kid in a candy store, and I bought every one of them,” she said. The dealer gave her some very limited information about the pottery, although he was not even sure how accurate the information was since it was handed down to him from another dealer. He told her it was either manufactured in Zanesville or Mt. Gilead, Ohio.

Shortly after that, Fisher took out classified ads in the Columbus area and the Mt. Gilead newspapers requesting that if anyone had any knowledge of RumRill pottery or had worked at the factory, to please contact her at her toll-free number. To her surprise, eight people answered the ad the first week it ran.

She made arrangements to drive to Mt. Gilead the following weekend and interviewed Katherine Kline who was the widow of Howard Kline, the bookkeeper that worked at the Florence Pottery Company which manufactured RumRill pottery from 1938-1941.

Fisher sat in Kline’s kitchen for more than two hours interviewing her about the fire that destroyed the plant in 1941 as well as all the other employees who worked there. Kline called neighbors to inform them about her important visitor and they came over to the house to be interviewed. Thus, the making of a book began.

Fisher continued collecting the pottery and researched every chance she got. During the advent of the internet in 1993, Fisher had a brand new tool to communicate with to the world. She found RumRill relatives and interviewed them as well as historians that had information archived about the little-known pottery. She then formed the RumRill Society Newsletter and had a membership of more than 200 the first year. These collectors shared their knowledge about the pottery and more and more information surfaced.

In the summer of 1995, Fisher met a man from Ravenna who also collected RumRill pottery, and the two of them began collaborating together. She found out that there were some catalogs and letters that the Ohio Historical Society had salvaged from the fire that destroyed the plant, and she borrowed them to put together the book.

It took over eight months to write the book and several weeks to photograph the 900-piece combined collection. “The 159 page book contains an important part of Ohio history that would have been permanently lost if someone had not written about it,” she claims. “This was my chance to do my give-back to the community so that I could share my knowledge about this beautiful pottery that was made by George RumRill.”

Eve Faulkner of Victorian wedding fame has expanded her territory in San Jacinto by adding some Hollywood glitz to the mix. She is announcing the grand opening of her larger 2,000 square foot shop, "La Boutique Consignments," which will offer vintage wedding gowns for sale, not just show, as well as high-end vintage fashion.
Faulkner, a favorite speaker at Frank's Collectors Conferences, is bringing "Hollywood to Hemet." Her store is located near the largest antique mall in the Inland Empire, Frey's Antique Mall in Hemet, which has 15,000 square feet of antiques and collectibles.
Faulkner's Victorian Bridal Museum used to reside in Orange and is now housed in the rear of the store—it is comprised of about about 15 authentic Victorian dresses. It is now just a small part of La Boutique Consignments located at The New Farmers Corner Mall in San Jacinto. Visitors can still drop in and get a history lesson in Victorian wedding etiquette, but now they can play the part themselves by buying a vintage bridal gown for much less than a new one at a retail store.
She will now be offering exquisite reproduction wedding and ball gowns that replicate ones from the 1600s to the 1940s, starting at as little as $500.
In addition to vintage and reproduction wedding items, there is high-end vintage designer clothing from Yves St. Lauren to Louis Vuitton. Seventy-five percent of the merchandise in her store is for sale.
After her husband, Rick's, retirement from the Los Angeles Police Department more than five years ago, the couple moved from Orange to San Jacinto. It might seem like an unlikely spot, but they already owned a home in Hemet, and found a store just waiting to house her vintage wedding collection.
Faulkner still lectures and puts on exhibits around the country on her favorite topic: Victorian weddings.

Operation Christmas Child
      If you have ever participated in the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child, you know what a blessing it is!
      Years ago, Franklin Graham, (Billy Graham’s son) started this ministry for poor children the world over, including the USA.
      If you wish to participate, you may drop off your completed shoe box to A&P no later than Saturday November 15^th. We will then make sure they are included with the shoeboxes from my church, North Orange Christian Church.
     WHAT YOU DO: Fill an empty shoe box, (it can be one of those plastic storage shoe boxes you get at a discount store) with age appropriate gifts and supplies for either a boy or girl. Go to http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/Pack_A_Shoe_Box for ideas of what can and can’t go into a box. Then go to http://www.samaritanspurse.org/pdf/one_sheet.pdf to print out the simple form which will accompany the box, and the label which indicates if it is for a boy or girl. ENCLOSE 7.00 for shipping INSIDE the box, put the lid on and DON’T SEAL. Boxes are opened and inspected at the processing center.   Bring it to A&P.
    WHAT Operation Christmas Child DOES: Hundreds of volunteers take in the boxes at their processing center, check that none of the boxes contain used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food; out-of-date candy; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snowglobes or glass containers; aerosol cans. They include a small booklet that gives the Gospel message in the child’s language, and then pack them for shipping to the designated country.
     It is a wonderful way to share Christ’s love with a child who likely will receive nothing else for Christmas. Kinda like going to the store to buy God a Christmas present!!! J
PITCHER PARK PERSIMMON PARTY (Public Puckering Permitted.)
You’ve never been to a Persimmon Party? How has this happened???
      Pitcher Park is a small passive park in Old Towne Orange on the corner of Almond and Cambridge (I got it right this time, Patty!). There is a small community museum which displays wares of a more agrarian lifestyle in Orange’s past, plus a fire museum next door. Also, a honey house shows how honey is extracted. These museums will be open on Sunday November 15^th from 12:00 – 3:00 for the FIFTEENTH ANNUAL Pitcher Park Persimmon Party!
     Fresh baked goods featuring the venerable persimmon will be offered, as well as vendors offering all things persimmon.
    A&P is planning on being OPEN that Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00…or until people stop buying stuff.

   We got an email from the president of the Redlands Glass Museum telling us that the latest special collection that is on display is Linda Makar’s Chocolate Glass. What is chocolate glass? It was opaque pressed glass made at the turn of the century that has a striking resemblance to milk chocolate.
    Here is what he wrote:
Chocolate glass was made by the Indiana Tumbler and Goblet Company of Greentown, Indiana, from 1900 to 1903. At least two National plants, the Royal Glass Works in Marietta, Ohio, and the McKee & Brothers Works in Jeannette, Pa., made Chocolate glass in 1902-03. Fenton Art Glass Co. made chocolate glass from about 1907 to 1915.
Imperial Glass Company has made a similar ware called caramel slag. which ranges from a light coffee-with-cream hue to a deep rich brown. Variegated streaks of color are sometimes present in Chocolate glass items, and the name "caramel slag" was in vogue among collectors for several decades beginning about 1930. Virtually all Chocolate glass was made as pressed ware.
Chocolate glass was revived in the 1960s, when it was first reproduced by the St. Clair Glass Co. of Elwood, Indiana. Some Chocolate items have also been made by Westmoreland, Degenhart, Boyd, Mosser and Summit. Fenton Art Glass featured Chocolate as one of its special colors for the Bicentennial in 1976.

When you think about Web-based businesses that have been online since 1995 and continue to be successful despite the many economic changes that have occurred since then, only a handful come to mind: eBay, Yahoo!, and TIAS.
TIAS? That's right: The Internet Antique Shop (TIAS.com) turns fifteen years old next year. The year 2009 was tough on TIAS and its antique dealers who run antiques and collectible storefronts within it, just as it was for many other ecommerce companies. But this venerable marketplace has always survived by adapting and changing, according to CEO Phil Davies.
"Back in September our CTO, Nancy Miracle, made some interesting changes to the system," says Davies from his home on Long Island, New York. "We started using Google Checkout more. It turns out that lot of people really hate PayPal. They want an alternative that does something similar. We found including Google Checkout really helped us with expanding our service. The more ways people have to purchase merchandise from us, the better off they are. The result has been a 29.9 percent increase in the dollar value of the average sale this month, compared to October of 2008."
TIAS got its start in the early days of the Web - April 1995. Davies was spending his weekends selling antiques and collectibles the old-fashioned way. "I would buy merchandise from tag sales, yard sales and estate sales," he recalls. "I would put my inventory into a computer database, then export the database to a print catalog. I'd print out a few hundred catalogs each month and mail them to customers who would then send me their orders on a first-come, first served basis. Then the Internet started to gain popularity and I thought it would be a great way to cut the cost of printing and mailing the catalog."
Davies used the Internet to find two programmers, Mike Wexler and David Elrod, who built the Web site. It was originally called "Incredible Collectibles" and listed about 1,000 items. This evolved into TIAS.com.
The first item sold convinced Davies that the Internet was a terrific place to do business. "It was an antique hand carved wooden box that was made by a prisoner in Upstate New York. I sold it to a man in California, which I thought was amazing since I'm in New York and the transaction could not have taken place if it had not been for the Internet."
TIAS competes with sites like Ruby Lane and GoAntiques (owned byWorthPoint), two other longstanding marketplaces for antique sellers. TIAS currently has about 500 dealers and attracts 670,000 unique users each month. Members gain access to a user-friendly store builder called MakeAShop to create their own sites. TIAS charges its members a 10 percent commission on items sold at fixed price or a 2 percent commission on items sold through online auctions. Two payment plans are available: a month-to-month plan with a $39.95 minimum fee, and a yearly plan with a minimum monthly fee of $34.95.
Only three employees and occasional freelancers keep the business running. TIAS is a true virtual company: "Our CTO is based near Dallas, our servers are in Houston, I'm on Long Island, and our customer service manager is in Michigan," says Davies. "We are incorporated in Delaware. Everyone has worked from home from the start, so we have no offices in the conventional sense."
When asked what sets TIAS apart from the competition, Davies mentions the fact that sellers can be members of TIAS and operate their own online stores, which can have custom URLs and can be customized at will. But in previous articles, I've profiled other marketplaces that also give sellers plenty of autonomy.
The thing that sets TIAS apart from other sites is its longevity. As Davies points out, experience gives the site's developers an advantage. They've learned not to sit still, but to adapt as quickly as the Internet itself changes.
"We've been around for so long that we've seen almost every e-commerce trend. With this knowledge, we've learned what works and what does not work." What works? He points to blogs. Posting blog posts drives traffic to individual sellers' stores. Each seller is given the chance to post on the TIAS main blog two days a week. On those days, sellers can post announcements of special sales or featured items they are offering. Visitors see the announcements right on the site's home page. Not only that, but TIAS publishes its own news items, such as a top selling list of merchandise that sold in the previous year. Those items are sent to a media list that includes 9,000 email addresses.
The fact that blogs and other social networking sites have assumed such a prominent role in recent months is part of what keeps Davies excited about running an online business. He himself doesn't sell antiques any more. He is interested in new marketing approaches. Along with TIAS, he manages a site called News Antique, which allows sellers to post press releases for free.
"I like the new features that are coming out with incremental speed on the Internet," comments Davies. "I like playing with our sales system. I like the constant change on the Internet. It's changing so rapidly, it's exciting."

WEST MOBILE, Alabama - Priceless antiques were swiped from homes in the Spring Hill area of Mobile and Gulf Shores. Now, the loot has been found and a prominent Mobilian named Matt Walker has been arrested.

Walker is well known in real estate circles and high society. His last known address is in West Mobile but the News 5 Investigative team has yet to track him down.

According to investigators, Walker would prey on the wealthy trying to sell their homes. He would reportedly get inside the house by acting as if he wanted to buy it. When the homeowners were out of town, someone would burglarize and take their heirlooms.

So far, investigators haven't been able to place Walker at the burglaries but they did find loot at some his homes.

A rough estimate of the items recovered is 750,000 dollars including silver that was once presented to then Senator John F. Kennedy from President Dwight Eisenhower.

Corporal Keith Miller with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office says there's even more loot out-of-state! "There's not a big market locally which is why our investigation has lead us to various dealers in New Orleans, D.C. and Tennessee."

Walker was arrested on October 22nd on 3 counts of receiving stolen property. He got out on bond the same day.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday November 5th.

Memories on Main Street Antiques and Art Show

Morristown, Tennessee (Oct 19, 2009) – Memories on Main Street Antiques and Art Show will be held on October 24, 2009 in historic downtown Morristown, Tennessee. Admission is free and the downtown sidewalks of West Main Street will be full of antiques for the show from 10 am – 4 pm.

Wells- Tile Pioneer joining social network movement

Scott Wells is one of the true pioneers in the vintage tile world and as far as quantity and quality, he has remained on top for more than two decades.
In fact, it was his Silver Lake shop that set the stage for the first Southern California antique show dedicated to tiles. When California Heritage Museum director Tobi Smith saw all the brightly-colored tiles, many from the 1920s tile renaissance in Los Angeles, her jaw dropped.
"She (Tobi Smith) got the idea for the Santa Monica tile show from coming into my store," said Wells. "She said, 'wow, we can do a show on tiles.'"
Wells agreed with her and had already tried his hand at a pottery and tile show with Marc Tisdale. They held a few at the Elks Lodge in Pasadena.
However, it was the inaugural tile show held at the California Heritage Museum that served as a springboard for the tile world.
"The Santa Monica Tile Show ended up being the most successful show she ever held at the museum," said Wells. Eminating from that show were two books that Wells helped to compile, and there has been a Santa Monica Tile Show every year since that first groundbreaking one.
Further spreading information on this growing genre was Norman Karlson's comprehensive and photo-intense hardcover books on the subject, which documented the major tile makers from A to Z.
"It was a series of four books," recalled Wells. "Those raised tile collecting to another level."
When Wells started buying tiles in the early 1990s there wasn't much of a market. However, he was able to find them in sizable quantities and inexpensively. He admired their beauty and was convinced that they would catch on with vintage home decorators. At the time, there were no books on the subject, she he set the prices and developed a market.
"A lot of people get into this and they get addicted and start collecting them like stamps," said Wells. For some its the colors and the designs, and for others, it's the way the glazes feels on their fingertips.
Either they mount them in walls which is what they are for or they set them on tables," said Wells.
There is plenty to choose from. According to Wells, collectors can get copies of original company catalogs and try to track down examples of specific tiles. There were more than 100 Los Angeles area tile companies during the 1920s heyday, including Batchelder, Claycraft and Malibu.
"When your eyes are opened to the beauty of tiles, you will see them everywhere in L.A.—in bad neighborhoods and in stair risers in old buildings," he said. "It helps make up the beauty and heart of what California is."

Famous Collecting author Mircea Veleanu is sued by AG for selling fakes

POUGHKEEPSIE—The state Attorney General’s office is suing to stop a Newburgh resident’s fraudulent antique artifact operation where he sold fake items for thousands of dollars over the Internet.
Mircea Veleanu sold artifacts online claiming that they contained high quality and expensive jade, when they actually were made of quartz or glass. He then refused to provide refunds or acknowledge that the pieces were fake, the AG’s office says. Their lawsuit seeks to permanently bar Veleanu from selling jade artifacts unless they can be verified as authentic and obtain restitution for consumers he defrauded, plus penalties and costs to the state.

“This individual preyed on collectors of expensive antiques and artifacts and didn’t deliver on his promises,” said Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. “Our lawsuit seeks to shut down this fraudulent operation and get money to those who are affected.”

Cuomo urges consumers to contact his Poughkeepsie Regional Office at 845-485-3900 if they purchased art or artifacts from Veleanu that they suspect are knockoffs or fake.
Veleanu is a retired doctor and collector of antique jade carvings and other oriental artifacts. He portrayed himself as an expert on such wares and has authored three books devoted to his collection. Since at least 2001, Veleanu began selling items from his collection, including jade carvings, under the business name of “Objets D’Arts Uniques.” In 2002, he began selling items through eBay and GoAntiques.com.
In 2007, Veleanu, of Susan Drive in Newburgh and Heritage Hills in Somers, sold two strings of jade Tibetan Prayer Beads (malas) to a consumer, one of which he falsely claimed was made of “fei tsui” jade, an extremely valuable and high quality type of jade. Over the next two years, he convinced the same consumer to purchase seven malas for a total price of $12,365. Veleanu continually assured the consumer that the jade was pure and of the highest quality. He also sold two calligraphy brushes for $2,400 and falsely described them as containing high-quality jadeite beads.
Upon closer inspection after purchase, the consumer saw that the beads contained bubbles indicating that they were actually made of glass and not jade. The consumer then subjected all of the jade malas she purchased from Veleanu to the American Gemological Trade Association (AGTA), which determined that they were all made of dyed quartz instead of jade. Veleanu refused to provide refunds from the consumer, rejected the labs’ results and continued to insist that the items were indeed made of authentic jade.

The Attorney General’s lawsuit seeks to permanently bar Veleanu from advertising and selling jade items unless it has first been tested and confirmed as legitimate by the American Gemological Trade Association Testing Center or a lab of equal reputation. The suit also seeks to require an accounting of all of Veleanu’s customers and full restitution to those he defrauded, including $13,983.03 to a single complainant. Cuomo’s lawsuit also seeks a civil penalty of $5,000 for each deceptive act and costs.

Avoid this book! Itis a relatively expensive tome with hundreds of illustrations, almost all of which are of cheap Chinese fakes with some of crudely carved Meiji export pieces, many with displayed signatures, none of which are identified. One piece, reproduced both on the back cover and also on the back of the dust jacket, shows a copy of the traditional 18th century netsuke model of a Dutchman carrying a cockerel, with drilled himotoshi on the front of the figure!

I am an experienced collector, but I've never seen anything like this publication and don't know what to make of it.

I am an inveterate netsuke collector for over 20 years. In addition, as a student of the subject, I have an extensive library. That this volume is terrible is one thing. There are many books -- so-called "vanity publications" -- where the cost of publishing is born by the author. The astute reader knows to tread carefully with those volumes (although there are many fine books of this type) because the book has no editorial constraints. The problem here is that this book is published by a respected commercial publisher who should have known better. The imprimatur of a respected publisher would lead one to the conclusion that some editorial attention and vetting would be present. Uh-uh.

Although I confess to not having the patience to review every page, those that I did are replete with fakes, Hong Kong knock-offs and pure junk. If Amazon would permit zero stars, I would have given it that score. Caveat emptor. Let the buyer beware.

While browsing a large Asian bookstore recently a friend who knows I've collected and studied netsuke seriously for over 30 years pointed out this book. I already owned every other title on netsuke in the store. I thumbed through the book for a couple of minutes and read some of the text. That was all it took to convince me that the book was not only a bad purchase for a collector of original, old Japanese netsuke but also for anyone interested in quality modern netsuke. Perhaps it contains a few pieces "of merit" (and that doesn't neccessarily mean expensive as there are many interesting and collectible pieces that can purchased for $500 or so) but I'm afraid I did not see any of them in this book. In my years of collecting there have been many instances in which someone has told me I have to go see the netsuke on display at this or that antique store or emporium. Invariably (with one exception) they have turned out to be of the commercial quality such as are displayed in this book. You will not find anything like these in a decent museum collection or knowlegable dealer's inventory. Under the Amazon/publishers description of this book I find it revealing that three links were listed with the following information:
"Asian Art Mall over 1,000 to choose from.
Large selection of high quality reproductions. Quantity discounts.
We buy and sell ivory for crafters Purchasers of estate elephant tusks".
These fit right in with the material displayed in this book. It is a shame to see this book listed along with the many fine texts that exist on netsuke and inro. I only hope that it will not influence novice purchasers of these pieces to continue accumulating what most serious collectors could only refer to as junk. The author has done the netsuke world a disservice in creating such a tome which will likely mislead the unknowlegable into wasting even more money. Furthermore, the author has written a completely inappropriate response to one of the reviewers who is recognized world-wide by collectors and who has published the most impressive bibliography ever written, "The Ultimate Netsuke Bibliography". The author would do well to review back copies of the Journal of the International Netsuke Society and compare his published pieces to those in the articles or perhaps buy through Amazon a copy of the L.A. County Museum of Art's extensive text on netsuke from the Bushell collection. That would be the best use of $75 I could think of for the author and potential buyers of his book.

Author fights back against horrible review
It is understandable that somebody might not like netsuke from different sources, it appears as you are a very discriminate collector!
You wrote that "thumbed through the book for a couple of minutes and read some of the text". This made you to decide to write a negative review on Amazon.com!
No honorable person would do such acts as you did, unless urged by somebody to do so. You should be ashamed of yourself, you "no name netsuke collector" from California!.
My response to your writing is directed to your statement: "the author has written a completely inappropriate response to one of the reviewers who is recognized world-wide by collectors and who has published the most impressive bibliography ever written "The ultimate netsuke bibliography".
It is interesting that another reviewer wrote a similar statement related to Norman Sandfield, the author you are referring to.
Do you have any financial interest or gain in Norman Sandfield's business, or are you one of the intimate friends of Norman Sandfield?.
Norman Sandfield never wrote a review of my book on Amazon.com and obvously, I could not respond to him. Sandfield wrote in the International Society Journal an inaccurate review of my book, full of libelous statements, all not true to the facts. I attempted to reply by certified mail to Sandfield's Journal without any success. You are claiming that I wrote an inappropriate response to a person who libeled me and did not give me opportunity to reply.

It appears to me as you belong to an organized group, (not limited to Robert Ross), with intention to cause reputational damage. The book of Sandfield, The ultimate netsuke bibliography", is an expensive, obsolete and worthless book that could be valuable 20 years ago when all the bibliographic information could be obtained from such compedium. All the bibliographic information is available today on the Internet through search engines as Google. The information about Norman Sandfield, whom one of your friends claim to be a most reputable netsuke dealer is enclosed in the comment to Robert Ross review and I am not going to repeat. My allegations are based on facts and not nebulous statements Sandfield wrote about my book in his Journal. One thing to remember is that selling on the Internet fake netsuke or misrepresenting the age is fraud!

latest review on YELP! At first glance, one would assume this is strictly a jewelry mall but a friend implicated it was much more than that so I had to check it out. I was pleasantly suprised by the array of cool stuff I found from Advertising, Cameras, 18th Century Santos Statues, Pottery and Folk Art. A favorite was Space #136 where the most interesting and eclectic stuff existed. Truly Amazing!

Remember the tabletop shows of the 1970s and 80s when collecting was still fun and more importantly, affordable? Join local dealers and private collectors Sunday October 25th for a revival of the one-day tabletop fair. Conveniently located between Beverly Blvd. and Melrose, Dawson's Book Shop/Michael Dawson Gallery is just north of the famous Larchmont Village shopping area. Highlights of the show includes works by Carleton Watkins, including a mammoth plate of "The Dalles, Columbia River, 1867" as well as stereo cards, and images of Yosemite, a number of fine daguerreotypes, nineteenth and twentieth century photographs and ephemera of Southern California, views of the California Missions by A.C. Vroman, a selection of anonymous politically charged press photos from the 1960s, and work from the Los Angeles Police Department Archive. Presumably the earliest work for sale will be William Henry Fox Talbot's "The Pantheon, Paris" 1843 from a private collection. Robin Blackman of fototeka (well known for the exhibition and book "Scene of the Crime: Photographs from the LAPD Archive") will feature "Mexotica" a new series of 1950s pinup photographs produced from a vintage set of color transparencies discovered in a small antiques store in Mexico City. These butter-smooth nudes were exotic dancers and aspiring models every bit as alluring as their northern pinup counterpart, Betty Page.

Sandy Raulston announced that the October Golden California Show was a smashing success. Furniture was flying out the door, Spanish Revival was sizzling and Art & Crafts was far from dead as had claimed in the non-prophetic words of Robert Sommers.
Raulston feels this may indicate an imminent turnaround in the antique industry.
Although there are three partners, Raulston has emerged as the producer of the event, with the full responsibilities that come with that job including promotion, allocating dealers spaces, and handling any disputes that may arise from either the merchandise or territorial concerns (one dealer infringing on another dealers space).

When not producing the Golden California Show, Raulston and his partner Birbilis set up at antique shows under their business name, Roadside America. They also have a large space on the second floor of the Pasadena Antique Show.
Raulston used to travel back and forth across the country and one of his most successful shows was the famed Atlantique City Show, then produced by Norman Schaut.
Schaut, who founded the New Jersey show as a vintage toy venue, approached Raulston at a Brimfield Show and asked him to be a dealer.
The show was new at the time, and Raulston was hesitant.

"I told him to come back to me after he had 50 dealers," he said. Schaut came back when he had 49 dealers signed up and asked Raulston to be the 50th.

He agreed and he continued selling at the show for years. Although excited at the prospect, he won't be doing the new Atlantic City Show under Allison Kohler because traveling across the country at the age of 63 is not as desirable as it used to be. It's not just being out on the road for days on end, but its packing and unpacking heavy furniture, securing valuable breakables, and figuring out where to stay along the way.
Although he won't be personally visiting east coast shows any longer, he has benefitted from the education he has received from observing what he considers the masters at work.

He had great respect for Hillsborough Show manager Lou Lengfeld. He rigidly enforced the show rules and the dealer's responsibilities were clearly enunciated.
"Nobody ever crossed him," said Raulston of his tough-as-nail style.
He also admires Dorothy Stella, president of Stella Shows, known for her Pier Shows in New York. She is one of the most respected promoters in the whole business. Arts & Crafts auctioneer David Rago respects her the most because she runs a tight ship.
Both Hillsborough and the Pier Antiques Show are taking place in November.

gogglesGoggles worn by Amelia Earhart during her 1932 solo trans-Atlantic flight brought $141,600 at an auction of historic and Hollywood memorabilia. The auction took place Oct. 8 and 9.

The goggles were part of a collection of items auctioned off by Profiles in History of Calabasas Hills, Calif. They came with two letters of authenticity: one signed by Earhart herself, and one signed by her mother. Profiles in History declined to name the buyer of the goggles.

Amelia, a biographical film, is set to be released on Oct. 23. The film stars Hilary Swank in the title role, with Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor.

A flight suit worn by astronaut Gus Grissom after his recovery from the Project Mercury Liberty Bell 7 was sold for $47,200. The flight suit was part of the personal collection of former NASA Physical Conditioning Supervisor Joe Garino Jr. The letter of authenticity accompanying the flight suit stated, “This flight suit was obtained by me when I was asked to clean out Gus Grissom’s office after his death in the cockpit fire of the command module. I was told I could keep it by Deke Slayton, my former boss.”

I have studied old books and imprints for over twenty years and unconditionally guarantee everything I sell to be genuine, so you know you will be starting on the right foot. Once you have become accustomed to the appearance and unique "feel" of genuine old printed items, you'll find it easy to spot the few fakes that exist. The distinguishing features to look for are always the kind of paper and the method of printing. It is essentially impossible to produce an exact replica of an old newspaper. The costs of faking the paper and printing would be extremely high and the result could not pass the inspection of a knowledgeable collector.

Thursday morning, Amazon.com took another step in its effort to bring instant gratification to its customers, introducing a new “Local Express Delivery Option.” If an eligible item is ordered before 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. (depending on the city) Amazon will have it delivered on the same day. To start out, the e-commerce giant is rolling out the service in seven cities - New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, Baltimore, Las Vegas and Seattle. (With Chicago, Indianapolis and Phoenix to come soon).

The service recalls some dot.com-era Internet flameouts like Kozmo.com and Urbanfetch, which delivered items to people by bicycle (interesting side note: Amazon was an investor in Kozmo). Of course, those earlier players did not have sustainable business models: Urbanfetch and Kozmo were saddled with huge delivery costs (paying a fleet of bike messengers) that they tried to offset with higher-margin products (DVD players and video-game consoles), but it didn’t work—most people just ordered a pint of Cherry Garcia and a pack of Marlboros.

Amazon has a well-worn distribution network, with massive shipping facilities near the urban centers it has selected and will use the Dynamex and A1 delivery services. The company is also charging extra for each urgent delivery.

Amazon Prime members, who pay $79 a year for free, two-day shipping, will find the new charges most palatable; same day delivery will cost an extra $6 an item. But non-Prime members will have to be pretty desperate for those Pampers Baby-Dry size 3 diapers: same day delivery will cost $15.

(Bookseller Barnes & Noble’s Web site, bn.com, also offers same-day delivery, but only for Manhattan addresses. Delivery is free for orders that are more than $25; a $5 fee applies otherwise.)

A photograph of some beautiful, glowing perfume lamps, one of a French pierrot and another of a chivalrous knight, attracted so much attention on the Collector Network that the owner of the lamps was ignited into a conversation over her luminous collection.Joel Easton, the Southern California antique district Map Man, was so taken with the photo, he asked the owner, Sandra Goroff, perfume lamp collector and publicist to elaborate.

"Perfume lamps were no doubt created to enhance an otherwise less than perfect smelling space," explained Goroff. "I think they were found most frequently in the bedroom, on a dressing table or vanity."
In the early 1800s, Justus Von Liebig and Charles Frederick Gerhardt initially developed the catalytic burner system that is the key component of the catalytic fragrance lamp. Liebig, a German Scientist made major contributions to agricultural and biological chemistry and was considered to be one of the greatest chemistry teachers of all time. Gerhardt was an equally famous chemist from France who was actually the original inventor of aspirin. Together, these two developed the catalytic burner system primarily as a tool to be used in hospitals and mortuaries. The catalytic burner system was successfully used to purify bacteria and other germs from the air and to kill bad odors in these settings.
A Frenchman named Maurice Berger was the first to receive a patent on the technology in 1897 and the company he founded, Lampe Berger, is the largest manufacturer of the device though there are a growing number of companies making catalytic fragrance lamps.
Goroff's lamps seemed to have worked without a burner, using simply perfumed oil and the heat created by the light.
"If you lift off the top, there is a small circular tray on the bottom in which perfume was poured," explained Goroff. "The heat from the light when turned on help spread the scent throughout the room. For me...that would have been far too potent."
Goroff's lamps serve primarily as decoration. These perfume lamps first came about in the mid-1800s, but Goroff's examples were made in the 1930s and '40s.
"I find their variety so interesting and their style full of romance and charm," she said. "In this grouping, my favorite is the middle perfume lamp which represents a knight on bended knee before his lady. Ah...if only modern men were so attentive."
According to Goroff, good perfume lamps and those made by well known glass or pottery companies can be very pricey.
Goroff is no stranger to the world of antiques or their prices. In addition to collecting perfume lamps, she is the publicist for the best known reference book writer today, Judith Miller, and used to represent the Kovel's.
Miller recently completed two new books that will be published in October, "Chairs," and "Twentieth Century Design."
The 336-page hardcover book, "Chairs," celebrates and scrutinizes nearly 400 chairs ranging from early antiques such as the 1680 Wainscott Chair and the 1740 Louis XV Chaise Lounge to modern day collectible chairs, such as Marc Newson's 1988 "Embryo," and Tom Dixon's 2007 "Wingback."
Her "20th Century Design" book is being released at the same time and will be 512 pages geared toward both beginning and established collectors. It will include more than 5,000 photographs and in-depth analysis that will help collectors get the inside track on which designs are the true classics and how to make the smartest purchases for the future.
From the birth of modern design, through modernism, art deco, mid-century modern, and the post-modern and contemporary years, "20th Century" takes a close look all the most important design and collectible categories, including ceramics, glass, furniture, lamps and lighting, clocks, silver and metalware, sculpture, textiles, jewelry, domestic wares and posters.
Miller is gearing up for a whirlwhind United States tour that will include San Francisco and Los Angeles.
'She will appear on the Martha Stewart Show on October 15th in connection with her "Chairs" book," said Goroff.
She will be in the Los Angeles area on October 26th and 27th.

He has traveled throughout the United States, England, Ireland, and Germany on buying trips, consulting with other restoration professionals, and visiting antique shops, art studios, museums, and premier manufacturing facilities that specialize in china, crystal, glass, porcelain, and pottery.

Marcia Brown

When Marcia entered the business world, she found that she needed to accessorize her wardrobe and the rhinestone world was discovered. As her private collection developed into over 12,000 pieces of costume jewelry, her hobby became her vocation and earned her the professional name of "Sparkles." She is a published author of five books on costume jewelry: "Unsigned Beauties of Costume Jewelry","Signed Beauties of Costume Jewelry","Signed Beauties of Costume Jewelry Volume II","Coro Jewelry","Rhinestone Jewelry: Figurals, Animal and Whimsicals" and a writer and host for seven hidden treasure videos for Venture Entertainment Group. She has also served as the costume jewelry advisor for the annual "Schroeder's Antique Price Guide", the "Garage Sale and Flea Market Annual","Maloney's Resource Directory" as well as assisting with other book's pricing updates. Marcia has also been a jewelry appraiser for the California Calendar Shows, The Palmer Wirf Shows and the Southern Oregon Antiques and Collectibles Shows. A board member of the Southern Oregon Antiques and Collectibles Club for over fifteen years and the current promoter of their semi-annual Antique Show. She is a fifteen year active member of the International Vintage Fashion and Costume Jewelry Club, where she has contributed many articles to the club newsletter and served as lecturer at their Rhode Island conventions.

Debbie & Randy Coe

Debbie & Randy are longtime collectors of Fenton and Imperial Art Glass, ceramic lady figurines, Easter items, Czechoslovakian figures, Consolidated Glass and Phoenix Glass. They first started writing for The Daze, a monthly newspaper on Depression Glass and Pottery during the 1980s and 1990s and currently are article contributors for All About Glass Magazine, Old Stuff newspaper, Glass & Pottery Review and the ACNA World. Their experience has earned them advisory roles with Schroeders Price Guide as well as Garage Sale & Flea Market Annual and Antique Trader Price Guide. In addition there have been many books that they have authored including three editions of Elegant Glass, two editions of Liberty Blue Dinnerware, Avon Cape Cod Dinnerware, Glass Animals & Figurines, Fenton Burmese Glass, two volumes of Fenton Glass Baskets, Animal Pitchers, Colors of Heisey Glass, Fenton Art Glass, A Centennial of Glass Making 1907 to 2007 and finally Corning Pyroceram Cookware. They even have their children involved by assisting them with books of their own, Tara on Fenton Cats & Dogs and Myra on Glass Elephants. As if that is not enough they are founders and current board members of the Pacific NW Fenton Association.
On a personal note they actively involved in 4-H. They are proud grandparents of Amelia and Avery Hixson and Misty, a little gray cat that is a delight in their lives.

Kyle Husfloen

Kyle received a Diplome D'Etudes-Civilisation Francaise, from the Sorbonne in Paris and a Bachelor of Arts in French and History from Western Washington State College in Bellingham, WA. In 1972, he joined the editorial staff of The Antique Trader Weekly and became the Editor later that same year. He has been a collector and student of antiques and collectibles for over 40 years. Kyle has written books on antiques, edited numerous price guides, made guest appearances on radio and television, conducted appraisal clinics, given lectures and conducted seminars on antiques since 1974.

Bill & Carol Kearney

Bill Kearney was introduced to the antique industry over 40 years ago when he and his new wife Carol did an estate sale in Iowa. Involved part time over the years he received the Graduate Personal Property Appraiser (GPPA) designation from the National Auctioneer Association in 2002. Since then he also earned the Certified Estate Specialist designation and recently graduated from Continental Auctioneers University where he received certification as an Auctioneer for Real Estate, Personal Property/Antiques and Charity/Benefits. Bill writes for a number of publications including the Q & A column for Vintage Magazine. He has experience and training for furniture, fine art and construction equipment among others. His favorite is "junk".
Carol Kearney also received her certification as a Graduate Personal Property Appraiser (GPPA) in 2002 from the National Auctioneer Association. She has attended numerous classes and seminars with topics on quilts, jewelry, fabrics, pottery, porcelain and glass. She is a past secretary of the San Diego Depression Glass Club and has appeared on NBC TV San Diego, the Calendar Antique Shows, the Hollywood Show, the Rose Bowl Show and numerous other shows and events.

Barbara Mauzy

Barbara & Jim Mauzy (pronounced Moe-Zee) are dealers, collectors and enthusiasts in Depression Glass, Fire-King, Bakelite and anything related to kitchens from the 1920s-1950s. They have been addicted to vintage kitchen related subjects for about two decades, but all of this selling, researching and writing is a second career for them. Barbara is a certified elementary teacher, principal and reading specialist. Jim is a retired executive from a large construction company. They have 4 children and 3 grandchildren.
Barbara has authored many books covering a wide range of kitchen collectibles and along with her husband they have authored numerous others.

Bill Rau

Bill Rau graduated from the University of Colorado with a major in business finance and a minor in art and began working at M.S. Rau Antiques in 1981(though he had been working with his father Joe Rau for many years before that.) Bill became president of M.S. Rau Antiques in 1991 and is today recognized worldwide as a leading authority on antiques. He travels around the world hand selecting every piece showcased at M.S. Rau Antiques and has been featured in and has written articles for many leading antiques publications. M.S. Rau Antiques has been a French Quarter landmark for almost 100 years.

Christine Saltzman

Christine Saltzman with her two grown sons started her career after graduation from "College for Appraisers". She has extensive experience working at two local auction houses. She also has appeared as a guest appraiser at the Rose Bowl Show, the Calendar Antique Show and at numerous other club and organization shows. She has attended many classes and seminars specializing in antiques and collectibles. Her favorites are pottery, porcelain, jewelry and furniture.

Connie Swaim

Connie Swaim has spent most of her life in the antique industry, starting at age 11 when her parents became antique dealers. Now in her adult life she has been with the parent company of the publications AntiqueWeek, The Auction Exchange & Collectors News and AntiqueWest which she serves as the managing editor. She is also an avid collector of Indiana stoneware and items from Parke County, Indiana as well as many animal related items.

Fred & Gail Taylor

Fred Taylor is an author and nationally syndicated columnist on the subject of antique furniture. He has an MBA/Finance, owned an antique furniture restoration business for nearly twenty years in Tampa, FL and maintains an extensive website at: www.furnituredetective.com.
He has published a book, "HOW TO BE A FURNITURE DETECTIVE" using the Sherlock Holmes approach to identifying antique furniture and has produced a dvd, "IDENTIFICATION OF OLDER & ANTIQUE FURNITURE." Currently he writes regular columns in Antique Week and New England Antiques Journal and has two syndicated series of columns, "Common Sense Antiques" and "Questions and Common Sense Answers" that appear in trade publications throughout the United States. Fred conducts classes and seminars for groups such as the NAA and ISA and he has twice been selected as the sole judge of the Florida State Fair Furniture Woodworking Show.

Dan & Beth Walker

Oexning Silversmiths, Inc. was founded in March of 1947 by Lars Oxening, a Norwegian immigrant who started his career as a silversmith apprentice in Norway before World War II. After the war, he moved to the United States where he worked for Tiffany Co., Jostens and several other shops before moving to Minneapolis and opening his own shop. Dan Walker joined the company in the mid 1980's after answering an ad for a silversmith apprentice. He stayed on after learning the trade from master silversmiths Carl Bloomquist and Dave Shutt. Dan and his wife Beth eventually bought the business in November of 1993 and moved it to the warmer climate of Bakersfield, NC, about an hour northeast of Asheville. From this location they continue to offer skilled repairs and refinishing on antique sterling, pewter, copper and brass along with silver and gold plating. Dan has continued his silversmiths' education by attending classes in Ireland, taught by master silversmith, Brian Clarke. There are few items that Dan is not capable of repairing or restoring and his skilled craftsmanship keeps customers coming back and refering new business their way.
Beth and Dan work with antique dealers, collectors, jewelry stores, churches and retail public from all over the country and get to see unique and beautiful items with interesting histories. The International Fine Art and Antique Dealers Show is a sprawling cabinet of wonders, an awesome hodgepodge of rare, beautiful and strange objects. Produced by the British impresarios Brian and Anna Haughton, it features wares from more than 60 high-end dealers from around the world: ancient Egyptian sculptures, antique arms and armor, African masks, carpets, fine silver, jewelry, glassware, clocks, old and modern paintings and tons more.
The show will bounce your imagination around like a pinball. A bigger-than-life ancient Roman sculpture of a muscular man’s torso smoothly carved from green basalt anchors the Phoenix Ancient Art booth. Not far from that specimen of beefy masculinity is an angelic, Art Deco-style head of a woman at Galerie Lefebvre; her thick hair is blowing in the wind. She was carved from white marble in 1924 by Alfred Janniot.
Among works by early-20th-century Austrians at Wienerroither & Kohlbacher is a luminous watercolor portrait of a young woman with long red hair painted in 1911 byEgon Schiele. More surprising if not more beautiful is a colorful portrait of Carletto Ponti, the son of Carlo Ponti and Sophia Loren, made in 1970 by the Expressionist Oskar Kokoschka.
Jill Newhouse offers two works on paper by very different creative giants. One, made in 1850 by the full-time novelist and part-time artist Victor Hugo, is a shadowy, visionary picture of a tower rising from a flat, murky landscape. The other, a mysterious, comical image of big, animated birds facing three bizarre, partly avian women with a smoking volcano in the distance was drawn in black ink by Max Beckmann in 1949 during a trip to Colorado.
The show abounds in furniture. With its walls entirely covered by Rococo wood paneling, the Steinitz booth is an 18th-century period room. Featured there is a neo-Classical desk made by Pierre Garnier in 1765; it is so understatedly sleek it looks as if it could have been designed by a 20th-century Modernist.
Don’t miss the vividly glazed vases by T. A. C. Colenbrander at Jason Jacques. Dating from the 1880s, the richly hued fantasy cityscapes and abstract patterns wrapping around them are visually riveting. Among a trove of quirky ceramic ware at Mr. Haughton’s booth is a seemingly more humble object, an unprepossessing tea saucer. The remarkable thing about it is that Marie Antoinette used it when playing milkmaid with her ladies in waiting.
In the midst of a museum-quality display of illuminated medieval volumes at Günther Rare Books is one of the show’s most intriguing items: an astrolabe made of intricately cut-out, colored woodcuts. Bound into a large, leather-bound tome, it was made in 1575 by Leonhard Thurneisser, a self-taught printer, doctor, pharmacist, astrologer and alchemist. It is a must-see for students of the occult sciences.

Atlantique City Show reborn

The new Atlantic City Show, under the direction of Allison Kohler has risen from the ashes of the recently defunct Atlantique City Show. The only vetted show in the country, the new Atlantic City Show will share nothing in common with the old show other than the location.
Kohler will bring a level of dynamism to the show not seen since it was taken over by F&W media.
The Atlantique City Show, which started out as the granddaddy of antique shows with over 1,000 dealers, had become so irrelevant that when F&W put it out of its misery in September, it hardly made the trade news, with the exception of their own house organ, the Antique Trader.
Although F&W blamed the economic downturn for the need to cancel the show, critics suggest that it was their inability to connect with their dealers. In their swan song, F&W used oblique expressions such as "core community" when referring to their surrounding cities, and the organically growing of their new businesses. It is likely they meant they would be starting from scratch, but perhaps they meant they wouldn't be adding any pesticides.
F&W claims they will be putting all their attention on one upcoming show which will be sharing its venue with a car show, but instead of saying that, they chose to express it as "co-locating."
The new Atlantic City Show will literally be filling the void left by Atlantique by taking place on March 27th and 28th, 2010. After F&W dropped the bomb, the Atlantic City Convention Center had been interviewing and evaluating a number of promoters and on Friday, October 2nd, Kohler, owner of JMK Shows, got the call that she had been chosen. Within hours, the new Atlantic City Antiques and Collectors Show was born and had been added to the JMK website.
JMK Shows, based in Succasunna, NJ, produces antique shows in Sarasota and Morristown, doll shows and home shows. Allison's parents, Rona and Jesse Kohler, founded the company in 1972. They are still active in the business.
Kohler, a Jennifer Connelly lookalike, is thrilled at the opportunity to bring Atlantic City back even better and stronger than it was before. She is currently working with decorators to create the look of the show, which will have separate sections for the various genres of antiques and collectibles. Floor plans are being set and contracts are ready to roll.
"I am honored and welcome the opportunity to create, re-invent and re-brand an event of this caliber in Atlantic City," said Kohler.
She plans to lasso in around 800 dealers to fill the 250,000 square feet of space.
The Atlantique City Antiques & Collectibles Show was founded in 1986 as an antique toy show by Norman Schaut, a former New York advertising agency executive best known for the "Don't Squeeze the Charmin" campaign.
At its height, the show used to draw 50,000 visitors to the Boardwalk over a single weekend each spring and fall. The show was filled to the brim with 1,200 dealers from 17 countries trying to sell under the cavernous roof of the Convention Hall.
Krause Publications of Iola, Wisconsin purchased Atlantique City in 2001, the same year that the twin towers were destroyed by terrorists. The show was sold to F&W Publications in 2002.
